Buckland Abbey

Originally a Cistercian monastery founded in 1273. After the Dissolution it was purchased by Sir Richard Grenville in 1541 for £233. Sir Francis Drake purchased the Abbey in 1582 for £3400. The Abbey remained a Drake family home and the centre of a large farm estate for nearly four hundred years.

In 1938 the roof was destroyed in a fire. In 1948 management of Buckland Abbey Abbey was undertaken jointly by the National Trust and Plymouth City Museum.
